Delhi Wakes Up to Hazardous Smog After Celebrations

Firecracker Ban and Recent Changes

Beginning in 2020, officials had implemented a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the hazardous pollution that covers the capital as the cold season approaches.

Yet earlier this year, the recently formed regional government appealed to the supreme court to propose a easing of the restrictions.

Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically criticized by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and public health".

Judicial Ruling and Reality

To the disappointment of medical and ecological campaigners, the court agreed to the proposal, mandating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be set off during designated periods throughout the Diwali.

Extensive ignition of fireworks during the celebrations also sparked a blame game with neighbouring the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani the Punjab region partly blaming declining pollution levels in their urban centers on contaminants coming from India following the events.

Persistent Pollution Issue

Public health and economic consequences on the nearly 33 million inhabitants living in the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to various studies.

The contaminated air leads to elevated rates of neurological, heart and circulatory and breathing conditions, and can even lead to oncological diseases.

The pollution is projected to be accounting for approximately 10k premature mortalities each year in Delhi.
