Storm damage in New Zealand
Residents encouraged to stay indoors as severe gales batter the nation.

Powerful gales reaching speeds of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have left nearly 90,000 properties without power and led officials to call off more than 100 aircraft departures, according to regional news sources.

These gusts are affecting the complete South Island and southern sections of the North Island, according to the country's meteorological service.

New Zealand authorities have issued infrequent red wind warnings - the most severe warning - in core zones including these major districts.

Locals have been advised to stay indoors, stay off roads, and make arrangements for additional electricity and network failures.

Widespread Impact and Crisis Response

This outage is primarily influencing homes mostly in the South Island, although officials say that energy was being restored progressively.

Domestic outlets have stated that in certain areas structures have suffered roof damage, and utility poles and vegetation have been knocked down by the winds.

In Wellington, a man was fatally injured after being impacted by a wooden fragment at a frequent walking route on earlier this week.

Additionally in the city, a woman was pushed toward oncoming traffic on a road by a powerful blast, in a event that was filmed in a viral dashcam video.

Air travel entering and leaving the city have been halted because of the weather, whereas certain highways and community centers are not operating.

At the same time local leaders have issued a crisis declaration, to assist emergency management operations.
