Users Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People using such drugs should be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually experience a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of cravings.

"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts stress that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural management.
